Timothy Eugene Scott (born September 19, 1965) is an American businessman and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from South Carolina since 2013. A member of the Republican Party. Scott’s political career began when he was elected to the Charleston County Council in 1995, becoming the first African American to hold the position since Reconstruction. He served on the council for 13 years. In 2008, Scott was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He became a member of the U.S House of Representatives in 2011 and was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2013 by then Governor Nikki Haley. Scott went on to win a special election in 2014, becoming the first Black U.S. senator ever elected in the state of South Carolina. In May 2023, Scott declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican Party presidential nomination, but he suspended his campaign in November due to low polling numbers. He is currently the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and will chair the Senate Banking Committee.
