Considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she won 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women’s doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King also took the singles title at the inaugural WTA Tour Championships. She represented the U.S. in the Federation Cup and Wightman Cup several times and was a member of the U.S. team when it won nine Wightman Cups and seven Federation Cups. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at the age of 29, she famously won the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ tennis match against the 55-year-old Bobby Riggs. She was ranked the world’s #1 female tennis player in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972, and 1974. In 1971, King became the first female athlete to earn more than $100,000 in one season. She is also one of the founders and the first president (1974) of the Women’s Tennis Association.
