Samuel Peralta Sosa, born on November 12, 1968, is a Dominican-American former professional baseball right fielder. Known as one of baseball’s most beloved athletes, Sosa grew up in poverty in the Dominican Republic. Sosa made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers in 1989. He played for the Chicago White Sox before joining the Chicago Cubs in 1992, where he became one of the game’s best hitters. During the 1998 season, Sosa competed with Mark McGwire, capturing national attention as they both chased Roger Maris’ single-season home run record. Despite not leading the league in home runs in those seasons, Sosa did lead the league in 2000 with 50 home runs and in 2002 with 49. Sosa’s career also faced controversy. In a 2005 congressional hearing, he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. In 2024, Sosa admitted to having made “mistakes” recovering from injuries during his career.
