He attended the University of Kentucky for two years before transferring to Arizona State University. In college, Kipnis was an All-American and the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year for the Sun Devils. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft. Kipnis made his MLB debut on July 22, 2011 and retired from professional baseball in 2023. He was a two-time MLB All-Star, earning selections in 2013 and 2015, and played a pivotal role in helping the Cleveland Indians reach the World Series in 2016.
