Chihuly’s artistic journey began at the University of Washington, where he studied interior design before enrolling in the first glass program in the United States at the University of Wisconsin. He furthered his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he later established the glass program and taught for over a decade. In 1968, a Fulbright Fellowship took him to the Venini glass factory in Venice, where he observed the team approach to glassblowing, a method that became crucial to his work. In 1971, Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, fostering a new generation of glass artists. His innovative approach involves a collaborative creative process and integrates bright colors and light. Chihuly’s work is displayed in over 200 museums worldwide, including the Palais De Louvre in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He has created well-known series of works, among them are ‘Cylinders and Baskets’, ‘Seaforms, Macchia, Venetians and Persians’, ‘Niijima Floats’, ‘Chandeliers’, and ‘Fiori’.
