Akira Toriyama (1955-2024) was a highly influential Japanese manga artist and character designer. He was born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. From a young age, he demonstrated a passion for art. Toriyama gained mainstream recognition for his manga series ‘Dr. Slump,’ which earned him the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1981 and sold over 35 million copies in Japan. However, he is best known for creating ‘Dragon Ball,’ one of the best-selling manga series of all time, with over 260 million copies sold worldwide. ‘Dragon Ball’ significantly impacted the manga industry and inspired numerous artists. Besides manga, Toriyama also designed characters for popular video games like the ‘Dragon Quest’ series, ‘Chrono Trigger,’ and ‘Blue Dragon.’ He was a recluse and avoided public appearances. Akira Toriyama died on March 1, 2024, at the age of 68.
