He began his entertainment journey in his father’s dance studio alongside his sisters. After gaining experience on Broadway, he moved to Hollywood and signed with MGM. Ebsen’s early career involved dancing roles, including performances with Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. He was initially cast as the Tin Man in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ but due to an allergic reaction to the aluminum makeup, he had to withdraw from the role, although his vocals for some songs remained in the film. After World War II, Ebsen gained widespread fame for his role as Jed Clampett in the CBS television sitcom ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ (1962–1971). Later, he starred as the title character in the television detective drama ‘Barnaby Jones’ (1973–1980). He has over 100 acting credits and has also written books and released albums. Ebsen remained active later in life, making cameo appearances and providing voice acting roles. He passed away on July 6, 2003, at the age of 95.
