Joseph Isadore Lieberman (February 24, 1942 – March 27, 2024) was an American politician, attorney, and lobbyist. He served as a United States Senator from Connecticut from 1989 to 2013. Before his time in the Senate, he was the Attorney General of Connecticut and a member of the Connecticut Senate. In 2000, Lieberman was the Democratic nominee for Vice President, alongside presidential nominee Al Gore, making him the first Jewish candidate on a major American political party ticket. He was known for his centrist to conservative stances and his willingness to cross party lines. After an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, he served as Connecticut Attorney General from 1983 to 1989. In this position, he emphasized environmental enforcement and consumer protection.
