Robert William ‘Bob’ Hoskins (1942-2014) was a celebrated English actor and film director known for his portrayals of ‘tough guy’ characters. His career began on stage before his breakthrough role as Arthur Parker in ‘Pennies from Heaven’ (1978). He gained acclaim for lead roles in films like ‘The Long Good Friday’ (1980), ‘Mona Lisa’ (1986), ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ (1988), and ‘Mermaids’ (1990). Hoskins also directed ‘The Raggedy Rawney’ (1988) and ‘Rainbow’ (1996). He received numerous awards, including a Best Actor Award at Cannes, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe for ‘Mona Lisa’. His career spanned several decades with roles in both Hollywood and independent films. He retired from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and passed away in 2014 due to pneumonia.
