He is best known for his role as Scotty Wandell on the ABC television drama Brothers & Sisters (2006–2011), D’avin Jaqobis on the Space television science fiction series Killjoys (2015–2019), and for starring in a number of Hallmark Channel movies. Macfarlane trained at The Juilliard School. He was also the lead singer and a songwriter for the band Fellow Nameless. Macfarlane has appeared in several films, including ‘Kinsey’ (2004) and ‘Bros’ (2022). He has also starred in TV movies, such as Hallmark Channel’s The Memory Book. In 2023, he was cast in the Apple TV+ series Platonic. Macfarlane is openly gay and is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
