Alannah Myles (born Alannah Byles on December 25, 1958) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, actress known for her hit song “Black Velvet”. The song was a number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1990, also earning her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and a Juno Award. Born in Toronto, Ontario, she began her career performing in Southern Ontario and changed her last name to Myles at 19. Before her music career took off, Myles appeared in TV commercials, worked as a model, and styled wardrobe for local celebrities. Her self-titled debut album in 1989 featured four Top 40 hits. Despite initial rejections from Canadian record labels, she signed with Atlantic Records in 1988 and achieved international success. She continues to create music and has faced health challenges, including ankylosing spondylitis. In 2021, “Black Velvet” was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, solidifying her legacy in the music industry.
