After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1984, Dye transitioned to a writing career, working for “Soldier of Fortune” magazine for a year. During this time, he reported on conflicts in Central America and provided guerrilla warfare training to troops in El Salvador and Nicaragua. While serving in the military, Dye earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Maryland University College.
In 1985, Dye moved to Los Angeles and embarked on a mission to improve the accuracy of military portrayals in Hollywood.
