Early Life and Education

Nancy Kwan Ka-shen was born on May 19, 1939, in Hong Kong. Her father, Kwan Wing-hong, was a Cambridge-educated Cantonese architect, and her mother, Marquita Scott, was a European model of English and Scottish descent. Kwan’s parents’ interracial marriage was unconventional for the time. During World War II, to escape the Japanese invasion, her father disguised himself as a laborer and fled with Nancy and her brother to Western China, hiding the children in wicker baskets to evade detection. After the war, they returned to Hong Kong and lived in a spacious, contemporary home her father designed. Her father remarried, and she grew up with five half-siblings.

Growing up in Kowloon Tong, Kwan attended the Catholic Maryknoll Convent School. As a child, she learned Tai Chi. At age twelve, she moved to England to the Kingsmoor School in Glossop, near Manchester, where she studied all forms of dance and ballet at a ballet school twice a week, initially aspiring to become a professional dancer, she then enrolled in England’s Royal Ballet School.

Career Highlights

Nancy Kwan’s acting career began when she was discovered by producer Ray Stark. At just 18 years old and studying dance with England’s Royal Ballet School, Stark gave her the starring role of a free-spirited Hong Kong prostitute in “The World of Suzie Wong” (1960), alongside William Holden. Despite her initial nervousness during her screen test, Stark recognized her potential and signed her to a contract, sending her to Hollywood for further coaching.

Her performance garnered critical acclaim, earning her a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female in 1961. She followed this success with the musical “Flower Drum Song” (1961), becoming one of the first actresses of Asian descent to play leading roles in major Hollywood films. Her earlier ballet training helped in her role in Flower Drum Song where she had much space to dance. These roles broke racial barriers and paved the way for other Asian actors in Hollywood. After starring in *The World of Suzie Wong* and *Flower Drum Song*, Kwan experienced a meteoric rise to celebrity. Kwan became the first Asian actress to succeed in Western cinema and was promoted as the “Chinese Bardot”.

Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.” (1966), “The Main Attraction” (1962), and “The Wild Affair.” She has also made numerous television appearances in series such as “Hawaii Five-O,” “Kung Fu,” “Fantasy Island,” “Noble House,” and “ER”. In 1972, she returned to Hong Kong to be with her critically ill father and stayed for a decade. She also acted in a spate of films made for Southeast Asian audiences, including *Fear* (1977) (aka Night Creature (1978)), which introduced her to filmmaker Norbert Meisel, who became her third husband. As managing director of her own production company, Nancy Kwan Films, she produced and directed dozens of commercials for the Southeast Asia market in the 1970s. She returned to the U.S. in 1979 so that her teenage son could complete his education.
