Patricia Sue Head Summitt (June 14, 1952 – June 28, 2016) was an American women’s college basketball head coach and player. She is best known for her 38-year tenure as the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012. Summitt led the Lady Vols to eight NCAA Division I championships and achieved 1,098 career wins, making her the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history (men’s or women’s) at the time of her retirement. She was named the Naismith Basketball Coach of the Century in 2000. As a player, Summitt co-captained the U.S. women’s national basketball team at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, winning a silver medal. She later coached the U.S. women’s team to a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In August 2011, Summitt announced her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and stepped down as head coach in April 2012. She remained with the Lady Vols’ coaching staff in an advisory role as “head coach emeritus.” Summitt was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (1999) and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2000). She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Pat Summitt passed away on June 28, 2016, at the age of 64, due to complications from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
