Early Career and the Landmark “Have Gun – Will Travel” Contract

Richard Boone’s career began in the late 1940s on the New York stage, laying the foundation for his later television success. His early television work included roles in anthology series like “Studio One” and “Kraft Theatre” during the 1950s. However, it was his role as Paladin in “Have Gun – Will Travel” that catapulted him to stardom in 1957. This Western series, where he played an educated gunfighter-for-hire, became one of the highest-rated shows on television during its six-year run. A distinctive aspect of Boone’s financial strategy was his request to spread his multi-million dollar “Have Gun – Will Travel” contract over 20 years. This decision, unusual for the time, aimed to manage his lifestyle and capitalize on tax advantages.

Film Career and Later Television Ventures

While starring in “Have Gun – Will Travel,” Richard Boone also ventured into film, appearing in “The Alamo” (1960) alongside John Wayne. His film career expanded throughout the 1960s and 70s with roles in movies such as “The War Lord” (1965) and “Hombre” (1967). Following “Have Gun – Will Travel,” Boone returned to television with “The Richard Boone Show,” an anthology series featuring a repertory company of actors. Despite critical acclaim, the show lasted only one season. Later, he starred in the medical drama “Hec Ramsey,” playing a former gunfighter turned early forensic scientist.
