Early Life and Career Beginnings
Sean Patrick Hannity was born on December 30, 1961, in New York City. He spent his childhood in Franklin Square, New York. His mother, Lillian, worked as a stenographer and corrections officer at a county jail, while his father, Hugh, was a family court officer. Sean is the youngest of four siblings and has Irish heritage, with all four of his grandparents having immigrated to the United States from Ireland.
He attended St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale, New York, for high school. Subsequently, he pursued higher education at New York University, UC Santa Barbara, and Adelphi University but did not complete his college degree.
In 1982, Hannity ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing his own house-painting business. Several years later, he worked as a building contractor in Santa Barbara, California. In 1989, while residing in California, he secured an opportunity to host his inaugural talk radio show at UC Santa Barbara’s volunteer college station, KCSB-FM. However, his weekly show was short-lived, being canceled after less than a year due to controversies surrounding the discussion of LGBT rights on the program.
Following his departure from KCSB, Hannity joined WVNN in Athens, Alabama, as their afternoon talk show host. In 1992, he transitioned to WGST in Atlanta.
Radio and Television Career
Hannity’s breakthrough to a wider audience occurred in 1996 when Fox News co-founder Roger Ailes recruited him to host a television program. The show, co-hosted with Alan Colmes, premiered as “Hannity & Colmes” and aired until January 2009. The show featured Hannity presenting a conservative viewpoint, while Colmes provided a liberal perspective.
Alongside his television endeavors, Sean remained active in radio. In January 1997, he joined WABC full-time, initially occupying the late-night time slot before moving to the afternoon drive-time slot in January 1998, a position he held until the end of 2013. Since January 2014, Hannity has hosted the 3-6 p.m. time slot on WOR in New York City.
Hannity’s radio program, “The Sean Hannity Show,” commenced national syndication on September 10, 2001, expanding its reach to over 500 stations nationwide. The show is a conservative political talk show that primarily showcases Hannity’s opinions and ideologies on current issues, events, and politicians.
In 2004, he signed a $25 million, five-year contract extension with ABC Radio (now Citadel Media) to continue the show until 2009. In 2008, Sean inked a $100 million, five-year contract with Citadel Communications (which acquired ABC Radio in 2007).
As of March 2018, “The Sean Hannity Show” attracts over 13.5 million listeners per week. This popularity led to Hannity being ranked #2 by “Talker Magazine” in their annual Heavy Hundred list in 2017. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November 2017 and received Marconi Awards in 2003 and 2007 from the National Association of Broadcasters as the Network Syndicated Personality of the Year.
In 2007, while still co-hosting “Hannity & Colmes,” Sean began hosting his own Sunday night television show on Fox News, titled “Hannity’s America.” Following Colmes’ departure from “Hannity & Colmes” in 2009, the network renamed the show “Hannity,” replacing “Hannity’s America.” New episodes of “Hannity” air live at 9 p.m. every Monday through Thursday, with the Friday edition typically pre-recorded. It is the top-rated cable news broadcast in its time slot. The show typically features a rundown of the day’s events, incorporating lengthy monologues and political and legal analyses of various topics and issues.

His first book, “Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism,” was released in 2002, followed by his second book, “Deliver Us from Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism,” published in 2004 through ReganBooks.
